The Job Search and The Beekeeper #Vision and #Hope
The Job Search and The Beekeeper #Vision and #Hope This weekend my cousin came over to help me with my beehive. The good news is that he easily identified the solution to my problem. The not-so-good-news is that the solution is going to be kind of a big one a bit costly and it will take a while. But this will be an important measure in ensuring my bees live through the winter, which they apparently werent set up to do. We suited up and I asked for a picture because many, many years ago, my grandpa was a beekeeper. If he were alive today, Im sure hed be thrilled to know that two of his grandkids, and two of his great-grandkids were beekeepers (to one degree or another :p). Heres that shot: Im on the right. Can you tell that I have my glasses on? Its hard to tell because of the black screen thats around my head the little black lines make it hard to see the black lines of my glasses. I broke my ankle in January and its still not back to 100%, so I find myself looking down a lot when I walk, especially in my backyard, which is not flat: In this picture we are walking from where we suited up to the North Forty, or the part of our backyard that is not landscaped (and is to the north). During this whole walk I alternated between looking down and forward so I was on the right path, but also so I wouldnt stumble. As I did this my eyes had to adjust between what was a few feet away (the ground) to what was many dozens of feet away (towards the beehive). As my eyes adjusted again and again, sometimes they would get stuck focusing on the mesh netting of the beekeeper suit in front of me. If my eyes stayed focused on the mesh netting I could see what was immediately in front of me, just inches away from my face, but everything else would be out of focus the dip in the rocks where I might roll my ankle, or the path to get to the bees, and I might take a wrong turn. I had to make sure I was focusing on the right thing so I didnt get in trouble. I could be intrigued and focus on any of the three things my eyes went to (immediately below me, or the mesh, or far ahead of me), but I couldnt stay focused on any one for too long. Isnt this just like the job search? The mesh is like our immediate needs. Its paying the bills this month. We cant close our eyes and ignore that, or well be kicked out, have our utilities shut down, or have bad stuff happen to our credit. We have to look at those and take care of those, but we cant consume ourselves with those or else we might stumble, or get on the wrong path. The ground below us is related to the very movements, or tactics, that we make or implement in our job search. I had to put one foot in front of the other, in the right place, and not step where I might roll my ankle. I had to watch out for the dips and hills because my bad ankle is just not good enough to handle those well. In our job search we have tactics, even micro-tactics, that we have to pay attention to. How are we writing follow-up emails? How are are leaving voice mails? How are we dressing when we go to network events? How are we doing the big things, and the little things? You have to pay attention to these and do them with care and purpose. The view far, far ahead, towards the beehive, is similar to our vision and hope for when we land a job. Yes, we have to pay attention to immediate needs (bills), and to the tactics we employ, but we also have to know what we are looking for. When we stop looking to the future, when we lose (or give up) hope, we forget the why. The tactics become less meaningful, we dont value ourselves correctly, and we shoot lower than we should. Having a vision, and having hope, helps us have spirit and purpose in all that we do. It helps us weather the very difficult lows (like rejections) in our job search, knowing that there is definitely, indeed, something better out there for us. Saturday, when I was first experiencing all of this, I was thinking about how important it was to look out, past the mesh, and focus on the future, but as Ive thought about it, Ive realized that focusing on any of the three, at the right time, is whats really important. Dont ignore one or two of these things because they are hard or uncomfortable take care of all three. How To Woo Clients With Your Next Business Conference
How To Woo Clients With Your Next Business Conference In marketing spiel, its usually classed as one of those make or break moments. Get a business conference right, and the potential business rewards can be game changing. Get it wrong however, and it can leave you with a big gap in your budget and damage to your reputation. As such, making a great impression with clients attending a conference is a serious business. Like a lot of things, experience tends to be crucial, and those of you who have attended plenty of conferences in the past will know exactly what makes them tick and ultimately what makes them successful. If you are lacking that crucial experience, its time to read on though. Lets take a look at some of the key steps to take in a bid to make your conference great. Location, location, location Its one of the most overused clichés around, but location, location, location really is paramount when it comes to these business events. It goes without saying that the geographical location is crucial. Putting your conference in the middle of nowhere is hardly going to tempt attendees. However, its also crucial to choose a suitable venue for this type of event. Trying to shoehorn a conference into office space rarely works. If your budget allows, a specialized business events building will work much better. It also adds a degree of professionalism, which is really important with this type of event as well. Delegate packs On the subject of professionalism, lets move onto delegate packs. This really separates the best from the average conferences. What tends to happen at the latter are a lot of people asking what time a particular speaker is on stage, or where a stand is. In other words, without printed schedules and delegate packs, frustrations start to occur. In truth, you really can do a lot with these packs. Some will merely detail a timetable, while others will start to talk about speakers in detail, give a page to each sponsor whilst also allowing plenty of areas for notes. A lot depends on your budget, but the trick is to at least make a little effort in this regard. Keeping everything running on time Another frustration which can occur for a lot of attendees is a lack of time management. This can relate to people not reaching the conference session in time due to huge queues (theres a nice problem to have) or even speakers constantly running over their allocated time and delaying the rest of the day. The best way to mitigate this risk is to have someone in charge of each area. Make sure that one person is controlling queues, while have someone coordinating the speakers so they are not left to their own devices. The aftermath A common mistake that a lot of conference organizers make is concluding the conference as soon as the doors close. There is no follow-up correspondence, even if its to ask how things were. Not only is it important to give your attendees a good final impression, but it can be good to retain their interest for future events as well.

The Seven Commandments for Surviving the Smart Machine Age
The Seven Commandments for Surviving the Smart Machine Age In the not-so-distant future, machines will be displacing a shocking number of jobs in America. Authors Ed Hess and Katherine Ludwig reveal the essential laws for adapting and staying employable in the Smart Machine Age. For decades, people have been grumbling over manufacturing jobs moving overseas. Indeed, keeping jobs in the U.S. was a theme during the recent election. And yet, regardless of any political hay that may or may not be made, Ed Hess says were in deeper trouble than we may realize. He predicts the impending age of automation will cause tremendous job loss nationwide over the next fifteen yearsâ"much more than weve witnessed to date. Research from the University of Oxford states there is a high probability that 47 percent of jobs in the U.S. will be automated over that time. Thats over 70 million jobs lost. According to Hess, these predictions are not science fiction; the machines are actually taking over, and its as scary as it sounds. The change will be driven by smart technology like smart robots, driverless cars, 3D manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and smart machines, says Ed Hess, coauthor along with Katherine Ludwig of Humility Is the New Smart: Rethinking Human Excellence in the Smart Machine Age. Many jobs requiring the personalized real-time adaptive delivery of services will still exist, such as teachers, nurses, and specialized trade jobs requiring problem solving and manual dexterity. But to be suitable for employment in the Smart Machine Age, people will have to learn new skills and embrace a key set of behaviors that machines cannot master. Hess says that these new skills include quieting the ego, better managing our thinking and emotions, learning to reflectively listen, and embracing what he calls Otherness. The authors refer to this skill set as NewSmart. Keep reading to learn Hess and Ludwigs seven commandments for developing these skills and thriving in the Smart Machine Age. Become humble, because its not really all about you. Quieting your ego requires you to embrace humility as a way of life. But Ludwig notes that humility doesnt mean submissiveness or thinking less of yourself. Instead it means avoiding self-absorption, self-centeredness, and defensiveness. People tend to seek to confirm their own views of the world and themselves, asserts Ludwig. But this tendency leads to closed-mindedness and poor listening skills. Thinking only of yourself gets in the way of having empathy and compassion for others. When you embrace humility, you can finally stop thinking its all about me.' Slow down and live fully in the moment. In our complex world of instantaneous messaging, news, interruptions, and pressure to perform faster and faster, we become reactive and reflexive, says Hess. We go on autopilot, but the irony is that in the Smart Machine Age we will have to slow down in order to do the jobs that will earn us a living. Its important to be mindful of this need now. Its counterintuitive, but you need to slow down to be better. So calm your inner motor and be fully present in the moment. This will help you see reality more clearly, listen better, and manage your emotions. Think like a good scientist. How do good scientists think? They approach the world with an appreciation for the magnitude of how much they do not yet know. They are open-minded, data-driven thinkers and decision makers. And they learn by testing their thoughts and ideas with experiments and always looking for data that disconfirms what they think. And if they find that data, they amend their ideas. In the Smart Machine Age, thinking like a scientist and being curious instead of being so confident that you know will serve you well by keeping your mind open and amenable to learning. Talk less, listen closer, and ask more questions. According to Hess, the ability to master continuous learning will be the number-one job skill in the Smart Machine Age. But mastering continuous learning is easier said than done. It requires curiosity, open-mindedness, and an acceptance of how little we really know. In short, it requires us to talk less and listen more with an open, nonjudgmental mind. Listening is a way to learn from others and allow them to help you do your best thinking, says Hess. You cant listen if you are busy formulating your answer while another is speaking. Nor can you listen if you are judgmental and just waiting to tell them how much you know and why they are wrong. Keep your focus on listening, and when it is your time to speak, ask questions instead of telling to make sure you understand what the other person is saying. Have the courage to try. We are on the cusp of a new age. Soon technology will do the easy jobs requiring efficiency and speed and the jobs that can be translated into an algorithm. The remaining jobs for humans will be the hard ones that require us to excel at the skills that are universally humanâ"skills that require us to develop a personal process to do new things and explore uncertainty. Having the courage to enter unknown territory and use all of your senses to learn these new skills is vital to your success. Manage your emotions. Ludwig observes that everyone deals with fears and insecurities, but she says that how we handle them makes all the difference. She says that the fear of making mistakes, not being liked, and looking stupid inhibits our best thinking and our ability to perceive the world and other people with an open mind. Too many people translate their emotions into regrettable behaviors, says Ludwig. They become hyperreactive and emotionally defensive if someone challenges their views. But we all have a choice in how we engage with our emotions. Learning to manage them and generate positive emotions will help everyone adapt in the future. Embrace Otherness. Otherness is the science of how to connect, relate, and emotionally engage with other people. It hinges on showing you care about and respect each other as unique human beings with great value. In this way, Otherness builds mutual trust that neither will harm the other. In essence we need others to help us think at our best, both critically and innovatively, says Hess. Embracing Otherness allows people to give each other their best selves without egos and fears getting in the way. It allows true listening and understanding to occur, and helps everyone better recognize their own biases. Otherness requires us to quiet our egos and manage ourselves better, and asks us to focus on other people as an end, and not a means to our success. In the Smart Machine Age, humans will be in a frantic footrace to stay ahead of ever-advancing technology, concludes Hess. These guidelines will help you recognize habits that may already be holding you back from greater success. By becoming NewSmart, you will be able to achieve the type of excellence that makes you an indispensable employee (and a better human being!) both now and in the future. # # # About the Authors: Ed Hess and Katherine Ludwig are the authors of the new book Humility Is the New Smart: Rethinking Human Excellence in the Smart Machine Age (Berrett-Koehler, 2017). How to Discover Your Niche as a Marketing Analyst
How to Discover Your Niche as a Marketing Analyst You have a passion for marketing data. Now its time to hone in on your strengths. Follow these tips to discover your niche as a marketing analyst. Changing careers to become a marketing analyst is a smart move. More than ever, marketing departments at companies large and small are relying on data to make decisions. The need someone to interpret that data and present numbers in a simplified way. That means that if you can make numbers and statistics tell a story, you can be a great marketing analyst. Theres also a growing need for marketing analysts. Between now and 2026, the field is expected to grow by 23 percent, outpacing most professions. The pay also coincides with the high demand. The average pay for a marketing analyst is over $63,000 per year or just over $30 per hour. Read on to discover what a marketing analyst really does, and what it takes to become one. What Does a Marketing Analyst Do? A marketing analyst interprets many types of data to help senior managers make decisions. For example, a chief marketing officer will want to know how effective a marketing campaign is. Theyll turn to a marketing analyst to pull data from various resources and determine if the campaign is working for not. They can dive deeper into data and pinpoint why a campaign isnt converting or advise if there are components like headlines that can be tested. Marketing analysts also work at ad agencies to help them decide how client campaigns are working and reporting back with recommendations. Many decisions are made based on the data and the interpretation of that data. A good marketing analyst needs to be able to read data from many sources and determine the proper course for a campaign or for the entire company. Companies may decide to release new products or enter new markets based on the forecasting data a marketing analyst presents to company executives. Types of Marketing Analysts When youre looking at marketing analyst positions, youll find that there are a number of different titles for marketing analysts. While all of these positions examine data and generate reports, they have different focus areas. Digital Marketing Analyst A digital marketing analyst focuses on digital marketing campaigns. They will look at things like website traffic data and whats driving that traffic. Theyll also make recommendations and create digital marketing campaigns based on that data. Marketing Research Analyst Your job as a marketing research analyst focuses on business competitors and customers. Youll administer surveys, focus groups, and other qualitative data like economic forecasts to uncover new opportunities. Youll help steer the direction of the company as you determine what products should be sold, where they should be sold, and who needs them. Your data will help determine pricing, the competition, and sales forecasts. Marketing Data Analyst A marketing data analyst will look at sales trends, economic conditions, consumer insights, and more to see if marketing campaigns are generating revenue and what are potential opportunities for the company. As you can see, there is a lot of overlap between these positions. They all focus on gathering and interpreting data in order to make key decisions for the company. Whats a Typical Day Like for a Marketing Analyst? Steve Jobs once noted that customers dont know what they want until you show it to them. That was certainly the case with the iPhone and iPad. Now, we cant live without those devices. Thats how many companies operate. Theyre looking to fill a need in the marketplace, and they rely on data that you provide to decide their next product launch, or market to expand into. A marketing analyst will also work in the emerging world of predictive analytics to find opportunities, too. You can learn more about predictive analytics. There really isnt a typical day for marketing analysts. One day, you may be staring at spreadsheets. The next day youre presenting findings to the CEO of your company. If youre stuck in a dead-end job, a marketing analyst can be a lucrative option. Its also exciting and rewarding. If you like crunching numbers and dont like to be bored staring at spreadsheets, this is an option for you. Career Path of a Marketing Analyst There is no one career path to become a marketing analyst. The reason why is that many schools and universities dont teach the analytical skills that are necessary to perform the job well. That makes it difficult for companies to find quality people for the job. Analysts may have a degree in statistics, business, or economics. They may have a background in marketing or communications. Marketing analysts are unique because they have to be able to combine the data-driven skills of an engineer with the creative skills of an art director. You need to have soft skills like good communication skills, excellent presentation skills, and collaboration skills. Companies look for critical thinking skills above all else. There is a growing demand for these skills and if you can show that you can ask the right questions, you will command a higher salary. You may want to start with an apprenticeship or internship to get experience as a market analyst. Youll also want to have experience with different programming and analytic platforms like Adobe Analytics, Google Analytics, HTML, and Javascript. Start Your New Career as a Marketing Analyst If youre thinking about changing careers, becoming a marketing analyst is a good option. There are a lot of opportunities as there is a growing need for these positions. The average pay for a marketing analyst is also above average. To become a sought-after marketing analyst, you need to be able to perform under pressure and make sound decisions based on data. Companies are going to rely on your expertise, and much like defending a dissertation, you need to be able to defend every decision you make. After all, millions of dollars could be at stake. You have to be willing to make critical decisions and withstand a tremendous amount of pressure if things dont go well. Ready to get started?
